Salinas – Liz Fleming’s third-inning grand slam Tuesday was the big hit that lifted host Hartnell to a 7-2 Coast Conference win over Gavilan.

After falling behind in the first inning, the Rams tied it in the second on Haylie Cloud’s second home run of the season.

Fleming’s slam put the Panthers ahead 5-1. Gavilan got its second run in the fourth as Amanda Perez was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Andrea Castaneda’s base hit.

The Rams (6-7 overall, 1-2 in conference) had just five hits. Jennifer Sherratt led the Gavilan offense with two hits.

“We didn’t hit the ball very well,” Gavilan coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson said. “We’re learning a few things as we go along. We have two more games with Hartnell and I am confident we’re learning from our experience and will play much better the next time.”

The Rams face conference foe West Valley College at 3pm Thursday.
