WBC Interim Welterweight World Champion Robert Guerrero celebrates following his unanimous decision victory over former Two-Time Welterweight World Champion Andre Berto on November 24, 2012 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.

Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. told boxing website 8countnews.com that he thinks his son, Floyd Mayweather Jr., will fight Gilroy native and interim WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero on May 4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“I think he’ll fight Guerrero next,” Mayweather Sr. told the website.

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, told the Dispatch on Dec. 20 that he is continuing to work toward securing a fight for Guerrero against Mayweather Jr.

“I’m trying to see if I can fulfill Robert’s dream,” Schaefer said at the time.

Schaefer said at the time that an official announcement was likely to be made in the first week to 10 days of January.

The other fighter who had been under consideration to fight Mayweather, WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, is reportedly scheduled to fight on the undercard of the May 4 event.

Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) reportedly is eyeing May 4 and Sept. 14 as the two dates he intends to fight in 2013.

Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) retained his interim WBC welterweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Andre Berto on Nov. 24 in Ontario, Calif., and has sought a fight against Mayweather since.

“He made it clear to us he wants to fight the best, and the best is Floyd,” Schaefer said.
