Richard Allen Maroney died in Chico on April 25 at the age of
87.
Born in Hollister in 1917, Richard grew up in Hollister and
graduated from local schools. He was an outstanding athlete winning
numerous awards in football and track. His family owned and managed
orchards in Hollister. In 1941, he married Crystal Murphy who died
of cancer in 1987. He married Lamarge Harris in 1989.

His family owned and managed orchards in Hollister. In 1941, he married Crystal Murphy who died of cancer in 1987. He married Lamarge Harris in 1989.

After graduating from San Jose State with a degree in law enforcement, Richard served the U.S. Army in counter intelligence. He retired from the Army National Guard with the rank of Colonel. He spent the next 40 years working as a financial broker.

Richard enjoyed golfing and was a past member of the Monterey Peninsula Country Club for 30 years. He served as marshal during several Bing Crosby/ AT&T PGA Golf Tournaments over the years. An avid gardener, he was especially proud of his flower gardens.

He is survived by his wife Lamarge of Chico; his daughter Colleen Pires of Hollister; his son and daughter-in-law, Dow and Char Maroney of Oceanside; stepchildren Nancy and Warren Nelson, Gary and Tracy Harris, and Mickey Harris; grandchildren Kelly and Erica Maroney of Oceanside, and Sean-Patrick and Tyler Patrick Pires of Hollister; Nathan and Wendy Nelson, Marisa and Derek Lerch, Courtney and Samantha Nelson, Patrick Nelson, Alana Nelson, Nancy Coleen Nelson, Lindsay Nelson, David Nelson, Ryan Harris, Blake Harris; and great-grandson Mason Nelson.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30pm Monday, May 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. His ashes will be scattered at sea at 11am, Tuesday May 10, at Point Joe, Pebble Beach.
