Richard L. Edvenson passed away at his Hollister home at the age of 83. He was born in Webster City, IA and came to Hollister in 1954 from Redwood City. He married his wife, Gertrude, in 1947 in San Francisco, was a member of Mound Lodge #166 IOOF since 1974 where he served as past vice Noble Grand and was a trustee of the lodge and the IOOF Cemetery. He served in the 101st Army Airborne Paratroopers unit in WWII, where he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Medal for bravery. He then served in the 82nd Airborne during the Korean War. Dick had a deep appreciation for his country and fellow veterans. He was dedicated to placing American flags at the gravesites of Hollister’s fallen veterans on all patriotic holidays. He was a partner in the former Holex Explosives Company, a life member of the American Legion and a member of VFW Post 9242.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Edvenson of Hollister, his daughter, Linda Edvenson (Ron Klauer) of Hollister and his son, Clyde Edvenson and his wife, Diane Edvenson of Hollister, his sister, Betty Orlando and husband Clyde and niece, Debbie of Santa Rosa, CA and his four grandchildren, Jennifer Dietrich, Lindsey Tremblay, Ryan Tremblay all of Rexburg, ID and Jake Edvenson of Hollister.
He is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Juanita Edvensen.
Friends paid their respects on Thursday, May 21, 2009 from 1:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Funeral services were held on Friday, May 22, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Pastor John Amelio of Glad Tidings Church will officiate. Interment will follow the services at the IOOF Cemetery where military rites will be performed by VFW Post 9242.
A reception followed the services at the IOOF Lodge on 4th Street in Hollister.
