Robert E. Bailey, Sr. died June 11, 2003 in Monterey. He was 78.
A native of Dewar, Okla., Mr. Bailey’s family moved to Hollister in 1933 where he attended Southside School. He was a graduate of San Benito High School before entering the U.S. Navy in 1942. Mr. Bailey served overseas during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Storekeeper D Second Class USNR.
He married Shirley M. Campbell in May 1946 and were married for 57 years with her. The family moved to the Morgan Hill area before returning to Hollister in 1962 where he lived until his death.
Mr. Bailey joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in 1961 where he worked on various large construction projects such as the Hyatt Regency Hotel of the Monterey Bay, Defense Language Institute, Fort Ord Hospital and the Cabrillo and Hartnell Colleges. His local jobs included the San Benito County Courthouse and the Spring Grove School.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Judith and Berton Tompkins of Los Banos and Linda and David Harris of Lancaster; mother-in-law Olive Thomas of Hollister; grandchildren Lori Reap of Euless, Texas, Shannon and Matthew Marshall, Matthew Harris, Maranda Nance, Paul and Lisa Harris, all of Lancaster, and David and Veronica Harris of Meridian and six great-grandchildren Austin Marshall, Lucas, Sarah, and Jarod Harris all of Lancaster and Cassandra and Brook Harris of Meridian.
Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his wife Shirley M. Bailey; son Robert E. Bailey, Jr., and his parents Charles O. and Margaret P. Bailey.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to a charity of your choice.
