Two weeks before the San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo, last year’s all-around senior award winning Cash Robinson, a SBHS junior, won the high school state title in saddle bronc riding and will represent the school in the 2013 National High School Finals Rodeo on July 14-20 in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
Robinson earned the state berth after winning the California High School Rodeo Association state championship for saddle bronc riding on June 8 in Bishop, Calif. Against eight other competitors, Robinson took first with a score of 55.5 – more than seven points better than second-place Clayton Brum.
Robinson also competed in bull riding, boys cutting and tie down roping. In bull riding, he missed a national berth by three spots, taking seventh with 10 points.
In the NHSFR, Robinson will compete against more than 1,500 contestants from 41 states, Canada and Australia. There are more than $2,000 worth of prize money, including $350,000 in college scholarships.
Contestants must finish in the top 20 after two rounds. The top 20 then advance to the final round. The champion will be determined based on all three rounds, according to a NHSFR press release.
The broadcast will air live on NHRSATV.com starting at 7 p.m. July 14.
