Paicines resident Cheyenne Rey, an eighth-grader at Jefferson Elementary, was named All-Around champion in the Junior High Rodeo Division at the California State Finals in Plymouth last month after taking first place in barrel racing and goat tying.

Representing District 4, Rey will advance to the Sixth Annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo in Gallup, N.M., from June 27 to July 3. Considered the largest junior high rodeo in the country, the NJHFR will feature more than 1,000 contestants from 47 states, Canadian provinces and Australia, competing for $75,000 in prizes and $80,000 in college scholarships.

Also qualifying to nationals are local competitors Clayton Bacon and Brody Sans.

Bacon was named the boys breakaway champion after compiling 55 points in the event. He recorded a 3.4-second first go-round, a 3.82-second second go-round and a time of 2.91 seconds in the short go for an average of 10.13. Bacon defeated his nearest competitor, Cody Snow of District 7, by nearly five seconds.

Sans, meanwhile, grabbed the last qualifying spot in bull riding when he finished in fourth place. Sans compiled 41 points.

Rey is expected to compete in both barrel racing and goat tying at the NJHFR after taking first in both events last month.

Rey narrowly defeated Erin Clendenen (District 1) in barrels — the Paicines resident winning by a 48-47 edge. Rey recorded times of 16.886 and 16.651 on her first two go-rounds before clocking a 16.615 in the short go to finish with an average of 50.152 seconds.

Rey also managed to defeat Kendra Legge (District 6) by a 49-44 margin in goat tying after she timed 12.12 and 8.31 seconds on her first two go-rounds. Rey then recorded a time of 10.24 seconds during the short go-round to finish with an average of 30.67.

Rey also finished in seventh place in team roping with partner Clayton Bacon and in 10th place in pole bending.

Rey is seeking sponsors to help offset entry fees and travel costs to Gallup, N.M. Donations can be sent by check or money order payable to: Cheyenne Rey, 33655 Airline Hwy., Paicines, Calif., 95043.
