Hollister – The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of a traffic accident Wednesday that caused a sport utility vehicle to roll over and sent five people to the hospital.
The crash occurred at approximately 1:40pm just south of Fairview Road on Airline Highway and also involved a blue Chevrolet pickup truck. The San Benito County Sheriff’s Office, Hollister Fire Department, the San Benito County Fire Department and medical crews responded to the crash. Caltrans was in the area when the crash occurred and assisted in traffic control.
The man driving a blue Chevrolet pickup truck was bleeding from his nose while receiving medical attention at the scene. The truck was facing north in the southbound lane of Airline Highway.
Two women, a man and a boy were in the silver Toyota SUV. The boy was up and walking while the three adults received medical attention on the ground.
The SUV had rolled onto the driver’s side, facing west on an embankment next to the northbound lane of Airline Highway. The front end, roof and hood of the SUV were crumpled from the rollover.
San Benito County Fire Marshal Jim Dellamonica said two ambulances were taking five people to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital. Dellamonica said a helicopter had been called at first but was canceled.
“The sheriff’s office did a great job of shutting this road down really fast,” Dellamonica said.
The cause of the crash was unknown at press time.
