Six local high school students competed in this year’s annual Rotary Club speech competition held at Ridegemark Golf and Country Club.

The competition was sponsored by Rotary Clubs of District 5170. The speech competition is to help young people know the importance of speaking effectively before a group to expand public knowledge of what Rotary does, according to a press release. This competition gives students the opportunity to compete for cash.

Among the six locals were: Danielle Burk, Sam Doty, Natalie Gardner, Spencer McCorkle, Sean Petree and this years winner Joey Mancino. The students were judged by a panel of Rotarians and their speech was limited to a specific time.

Mancino, at left with his mother, Candice Hooper, the San Benito County district attorney, is a senior at San Benito High School and gave his five-minute speech on “Rotary Shares” which incorporated the Rotary’s four-way test that serves Rotarians as a guide for everyday living, according to a press release.
