The Anzar football team fell to 0-2 in the young football season Friday, falling to Kings Christian 38-6 in Lemoore.
Once again, the Hawks never led, but its defense was able to limit a high-powered Crusader attack that scored 90 points the week before.
Joseph Banuelos led the defense with seven tackles and a sack. Angel Jimenez contributed six tackles in the loss.
On offense, Anzar continued to struggle to find a consistent offensive rhythm. Quarterback Jeremy Cedeno finished the game 5-for-7 with 19 yards passing. He turned the ball over twice, though, to limit the Hawk opportunities.
He made up for his mistakes through the air on the ground. Cedeno finished with a team-high 57 yards on four carries. He scored the team’s only touchdown in the first quarter on a six-yard scamper.
Andrew Huaracha rushed for 28 yards on six carries and Trent More finished with 20 yards on three carries.
Six Hawks combined to rush for 131 yards in the loss.
The Hawks will host Stuart Hall on Sept. 28. The game is expected to start at 6 p.m.
SBHS Volleyball
The San Benito volleyball team fell to 3-4 in the early season, dropping to Harbor 3-1 Thursday. The Balers started the match struggling, losing 25-15 in the first set.
San Benito’s only win game in the second set, when it needed extra time to squeeze by 26-24. In the final two sets, the Balers were outscored 25-17 and 25-13.
Alexandria Smallwood led the Balers with 12 kills. Erica Chapa and Ellie Burley each finished with seven kills. Marissa Espino finished with 18 assists and Raelynn Heredia led the team with 35 digs.
The Balers host Cupertino at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
SBHS Tennis
After struggling against Carmel and Aptos to open the season, the Balers earned their first win Friday, in a 5-2 win over Presentation High at the Ridgemark Tennis Center.
Singles players Audrey Marshall (6-2, 6-0) and Amanda Alvarez (6-1, 6-4) each earned victories for the Balers.
Double partners Annie Tobias and Gianna Brigantino won in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 10-7). Teammates Gwendolynn Fernstrom and Berenice Bribiesca won in two sets (6-2, 6-2) to clinch the Baler victory.
The Balers start their league season Thursday against Christopher High. The match starts at 3:30 p.m.
SBHS Cross-Country
The girls cross-country team started out well for the Balers during Saturday’s Earlybird Invitational at Toro Park in Salinas.
Vanessa Estrada finished in second place overall with a time of 18:09 to help the Baler finish second overall.
Maura Forbush placed 20th with a time of 20:07. Sophomore Amy Quinones fished just four spots below her teammate with a time of 20:15.
San Benito finished 17 seconds behind San Lorenzo Valley for second place with a combined time of 1:40.44.
For the boys, San Benito’s Steven Velarde finished 15th overall during the boys competition, running with a time of 16:10. Ricardo Esqueda played 20th overall with a time of 16:20. Elijah Changco finished in 136th place with a time of 17:56.
Overall, the boys team placed 12th overall with a combined time of 1:27.00.
Gavilan Football
Shasta College handed Gavilan its first defeat of the season, topping the Rams 43-19 on Saturday in Redding.
“We weren’t as prepared as we were last week,” Gavilan head coach Spencer Gilford said. “We didn’t take care of what we needed to.”
Shasta led 15-13 after the first quarter and 22-13 by halftime. Gavilan trailed by 10 (29-19) entering the fourth quarter, but a blocked punt turned touchdown by Shasta (2-0) made a Gavilan (1-1) comeback that much more difficult.
“We need to do a much better job of preparing for a road trip like this,” Gilford added. “We will go back to the drawing board this coming week.”
Four Rams recorded double-digit tackles, including linebacker Tim Rodriguez and is team-high 17 (10 solo.) Defensive lineman William Lee had 14 tackles, seven for loss, and a sack. Cornerback Shawn Paul had 15 tackles (12 solo), Cordell Johns had 11 tackles, and Arnold Henderson contributed a sack.
Quarterback Omar Kharroub hit on 16-of-32 passes for 218 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Marcus Harrell was the leading receiver with three catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Edward Bernard carried the ball 13 times for 42 yards and a score, plus added five catches for 51 yards.
Gavilan is back home this Saturday with a nonconference game against Contra Costa College at 5 p.m. at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
Gavilan Soccer
The Gavilan College men’s soccer team evened its nonconference record with a 3-0 victory over visiting Butte College on Friday in Gilroy.
Anthony Velazquez delivered two goals and Kristian Urias had the other for the 2-2 Rams. Nick Lhermine was credited with an assist.
Gavilan has a pair of road contests to contend with next week. The Rams are at San Joaquin Delta College on Tuesday and at Yuba College on Friday. Both games are nonconference.
