The San Benito boys basketball team opened the season’s league play Friday with a 62-56 victory over Monterey.

The win improves the Balers’ overall record to 11-2.

In the game, San Benito grabbed an early 14-11 lead and stayed atop the scoreboard the rest of the night. Monterey’s Chris Russo scored 25 points in defeat.

For the Balers, Jacob Tonascia continued his quick start, finishing with a team-high 17 points. Robert Henderson also scored 17 points for the Balers. Off the bench Tony Diaz added 11 points and Hyram Miskin finished with eight.

The Balers continue league play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Salinas High. The Cowboys opened their league season Friday with a 45-41 loss to Seaside.

Anzar basketball

The Anzar girls basketball team’s fast start came to a sudden end over the weekend, as the Hawks dropped both its last two games heading into league play Friday.

After defeating KIPP Collegiate on Thursday, the Hawks dropped back-to-back games against Soledad and Crystal Springs.

Against Soledad, the Hawks couldn’t keep pace with the non-Division V opponent despite 24 points from Tera Reed. Soledad defeated the Hawks 55-46.

On Saturday, Reed scored 13 points but it wasn’t enough against Crystal Springs, which won 51-36. Fellow freshman Justine Lee added eight points in the loss.

The losses gives the Hawks a 7-5 record heading into league play Friday against Oakwood.

The Anzar boys early-season struggles continued Friday against Soledad, as the Hawks fell 101-18. With the loss, Anzar is now 0-9 to start the season. The Hawks league season begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday against Anchorpoint Christian in San Juan Bautista.
