San Benito's Denise Martinez drives to the basket as Soquel keeps a tight defense during their game Tuesday.

In a physical contest, the San Benito girls basketball team came short against North Salinas on Thursday, losing 47-45 in Hollister.

The loss gives San Benito a 3-3 record inside the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division and a 9-9 overall record.

In the game, San Benito got behind early – trailing 29-13 at halftime – because of the Vikings full-court press defense. Eventually, in the second half, the Balers started to get some breaks and pulled to within two points in the game’s final moments.

San Benito had two chances to tie or take the lead, but the Balers couldn’t take advantage in the loss.

Denise Martinez finished with a team-high 12 points in the loss. Anjelica Collins scored nine points as Ellie Burley and Elizabeth Reikowski finished with eight points.

“The girls played well, it just came down to making a couple of shots,” SBHS head coach Mitch Burley said.

San Benito’s league season continues at 2 p.m. Saturday on the road at Alisal.
