The San Benito cross-country swept the top two positions for the boys and girls squads during Wednesday’s Monterey Bay League meet at Monterey High.
Steven Velarde (16:08) and Ricardo Esqueda (16:40) finished first and second, helping the Balers once again finish with the fastest runners. Though, as a team, San Benito struggled because of a lack of depth.
Matthew Reikowski (17:53) finished in 19th place for San Benito for the third fastest Baler time. Zack Martin (18:08) finished in 24th place and Javier Azcona (18:12) placed 26th.
On the girls side, San Benito finished with three runners in the top four to run away with the girls title. Vanessa Estrada placed first with a time of 18:24. Amy Quinones placed second (19:48) and Maura Forbush finished third (20:20).
SBHS girls volleyball
The San Benito volleyball team improved to 6-2 inside the MBL on Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of Monte Vista Christian.
The Balers controlled the match winning 25-11, 25-10, 25-19 to take further control of second place in the MBL Gabilan Division.
Ellie Burley finished with a game-high 16 kills and 17 digs. Alexandria Smallwod contributed 10 kills in the win as well.
Marissa Espino finished with 25 assists and Raelynn Heredia finished with 25 digs.
SBHS girls water polo
The Balers fell to 7-5 inside the MBL Tuesday, falling 9-8 to Santa Catalina School in Hollister.
Caitlin Schafer finished with a game-high five goals for the Balers in the loss. Hannah Smith and Riley Drexler each finished with a goal for San Benito.
In the cage, Meghan Parson finished with seven saves.
AHS volleyball
After suffering its second league loss Tuesday to Santa Catalina School (3-0), the Hawks returned to the winner’s column Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over Pacific Grove.
The Hawks started with a tough loss to Santa Catalina on the road. Anzar could never come close to a set victory, falling 25-15, 26-24, 25-16.
Anzar, though, won Wednesday to stay in second place, beating Pacific Grove 3-0. The Hawks never allowed more than 14 points in the 25-14, 25-18, 25-12 sweep.
Raleigh McKinney finished with a game-high 16 kills. Lindsey Staley finished with 10 kills in the victory for AHS.
