Thanks to another medalist showing by senior Emiley Palmquist, the San Benito girls golf team squeezed by Salinas 288-301 Tuesday at San Juan Oaks Golf Course.

Palmquist shot a match low of 40, beating the Cowboys’ Elizabeth Leavitt by three shots. Lexi Branon also played well for the Balers, carding a 49 to place second for San Benito.

Alicia Soria’s 64, Amy Carvahlo’s 67 and Jamie Kelly’s 68 rounded out the Balers top scorers in Tuesday’s victory. The Balers traveled to Poppy Hills on Thursday to play Pacific Grove. Look online for an update.

On Monday, the Balers host Stevenson in their final home match of the year.

SBHS Boys Water Polo

The consistent offense of the Monterey water polo team was too much for San Benito on Tuesday, as the Balers Monterey Bay League woes continued in a 10-5 loss.

The loss gives San Benito a 1-8 record inside league play. In the game, San Benito scored in every quarter, but Monterey scored at least five goals in each half.

The Balers hosted Aptos on Thursday. Look online for an update. The Balers travel to Carmel on Tuesday to continue league play.

SBHS girls water polo

The Balers improved to 6-4 inside the MBL’s Gabilan Division on Tuesday with a high-scoring 20-10 win over Stevenson.

Caitlin Schafer propelled the Balers with a game-high 15 goals. Rachel Estep, Gracie Larson and Erin Hepner all scored for San Benito in the win.

The Balers traveled to Aptos on Thursday. Look online for an update.

Their league season continues at 4 p.m. Tuesday when the Balers host Santa Catalina School.

AHS Volleyball

The Anzar volleyball team is still on a roll, after improving to 7-1 with triumphs over Soledad and Gonzales this week.

The Hawks have now won six league matches in a row.

Anzar opened the week Monday with its second 3-0 sweep of Soledad this year. The Hawks never allowed Soledad to score more than 15 points in three 25-15 victories.

Raleigh McKinney led the team with eight kills, as Anzar used seven hitters to earn the victory. Justine Lee contributed four kills and Delaney McKinney and Monica Medina each scored three kills in the win.

The Hawks continued that momentum Tuesday with another 3-0 victory over Gonzales. Anzar started quickly, winning the first game 25-6. Afterward, the Hawks rolled with two-straight victories (25-21, 25-20).

Raleigh McKinney, again, led the Hawks with a game-high 14 kills. Medina finished with 35 assists in the win.

The Hawks league season continues Tuesday when they face Santa Catalina School on the road. The Cougars gave Anzar their only loss of the year inside league play.

Gavilan Volleyball

The Gavilan College women’s volleyball team unsealed Coast Conference South play with a little bit of history in Los Altos Hills on Tuesday night.

The Rams (10-7 overall, 1-0 conference) defeated Foothill College 25-15, 25-22, 25-21 – the first victory over the Owls in program history.

Foothill, which has at least a share of the Coast Conference North crown in each of the last seven seasons, moved into the South this season as part of a routine conference shuffle.

Freshman Sabina Gerard facilitated Rams hitters with 36 assists. Her deliveries led to a team-high 13 kills from Kayce Skocko and 11 kills by Eva Latu.

In the back, Kayondra Hood picked up 23 digs. At the net, Andreinna Castaneda got up for five blocks.

The Rams continue South action Friday night as they host Ohlone College (1-0 conference). First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m.
