Despite missing a majority of its team because of basketball, the boys volleyball team opened the season with a three-game sweep of San Lorenzo Valley.

San Benito never trailed during the match, and won by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-17.

“I think we did surprisingly better than I thought we would because we were missing so many people,” head coach Samantha Klauer said. “”I had to pull up some JV players to fill spots. It was great because everyone got experience.”

SBHS boys baseball

With 12 walks in seven innings, the Balers handed their first game of the season to Valley Christian, losing 11-2.

San Benito allowed nine hits and committed three errors in the loss.

The Balers trailed 4-2 after four innings but Valley Christian struck for seven runs in the final three innings to blow away San Benito.

San Benito’s Jose Guzman’s solo home run was the lone bright spot for the Balers.

On Monday in the first game of the Wilcox tournament, the Balers fell to Valley Christian against, losing 5-0. Valley Christian scored all five runs in the first innings, as San Benito committed an error and walked two batters.

No Baler had more than one hit on the day.

San Benito travels to San Jose at 4 p.m. Wednesday to continue the Wilcox tournament against Christopher.

SBHS swim and dive

The San Benito girls swim and dive team fell to Valley Christian 119 to 53. However, the Balers record one Central Coast Section qualifying time in the girls medley relay.

Rachel Estep, Caitlin Schafer, Haley Carson and Katarina Ortiz swam the relay in two minutes.

The boys team also fell to Valley Christian 120 to 50.

AHS girls basketball

The Hawks were eliminated in a close game in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division V playoffs Thursday.

Anzar fell 36-34 to Eastside College Prep.

The girls finished their season with a 8-16 overall record and a 6-3 record in the Coastal Athletic League.

AHS baseball

The Hawks opened their first season under manager Sam Stewart with a 7-7 tie with Watsonville on Wednesday. The game was called after seven innings because of darkness.

Anzar hosts Pajaro Valley at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

AHS softball

The Hawks fell 8-4 to Alvarez on Tuesday to open the 2012 season. The Hawks’ next game against North Monterey County was canceled Thursday.

The Hawks travel to Watsonville at 3:45 p.m. Thursday.
