San Benito cross-country runner Vanessa Estrada warmed up for Wednesday’s league meet in Gilroy with a ninth place finish at the 39th annual Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto on Saturday.

Estrada led the San Benito girls team with a time of 18:05. Glacier Peak High School’s Amy-Eloise Neale placed first with a time of 16:52.

San Benito’s Maura Forbush placed 73rd with a time of 19:52. Amy Quinones placed 97th with a time of 20:16 to round out the Balers’ best finishers.

SBHS volleyball

The Balers improved to 3-1 inside the Monterey Bay League on Thursday with a 3-0 victory over North Salinas.

San Benito dominated the first set, winning convincingly (25-12). In the next two sets, though, San Benito squeaked by with a pair of 25-23 victories.

San Benito’s league season continues at 6:30 p.m. in Seaside.

SBHS girls water polo

Soquel continued to give San Benito problems, beating the Balers 19-10 Thursday, to give San Benito a 5-3 record inside the MBL. It was the second time Soquel has beaten the Balers this year.

In the game, Soquel grabbed an 11-5 halftime lead and rolled to the easy victory, outscoring San Benito in three of the four quarters.

The Balers return to the pool Tuesday when they host San Lorenzo Valley at 4 p.m.

SBHS boys water polo

The San Benito season struggles continued Thursday, as the Balers fell to 1-6 inside MBL play with a 12-2 loss to Soquel.

San Benito didn’t score until the game’s final quarter when the score was already out of hand.

The Balers fared a little better during the St. Francis tournament in Mountain View on Friday and Saturday.

The Balers finished 1-1 after Friday’s play, losing to Salinas 13-8 before beating Palma 12-10.

The tournament ended, though, Saturday with a 7-6 overtime loss to Archbishop Mitty.

San Benito travels to Santa Cruz on Tuesday.

AHS volleyball

The Hawks continued to showcase its improved squad Thursday, with a 3-0 sweep of Stevenson.

Anzar controlled the match from the beginning, winning 25-8 in the opening set. The Hawks won the final two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-23.

Raleigh McKinney led the Hawks with 12 kills. Monica Medina contributed 19 assists and Mali Gonzalez finished with 21 digs for the Hawks.

Anzar hosts King City at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
