For the fifth time this year, the San Benito boys golf team finished a close second to Palma in a Tri-County Athletic League tournament.

On Wednesday, San Benito carded a 200 — four strokes behind the Chieftains —at Leguna Seca Golf Ranch in Monterey to place second.

“They are a competitive team, and they are shooting the ball really well right now,” San Benito head coach Regie Synegal said. “We are right there, though. But hats off to them.”

John German shots a team-low 38 to lead the Balers. No. 1 golfer Ryan Han carded a 39. Aaron Smith (40), Andrew Colton (42), Greg Moreno (41) and Brain Wall (49) rounded out the Baler scoring.

The second-place finish came a day after beat Heritage 212-213 at San Juan Oaks Golf Course. In the non-league match — without Han — squeaked by thanks to Smith and Colton’s 40-stroke round.

“They played great,” Synegal said. “The kids are really starting to play good and get it. I felt like they were starting to play smart golf. As a coach, I have to be excited to see that.”
