Behind five innings from starter Megan Sabbatini and three home runs, San Benito stayed undefeated with a 18-3 blowout win in a shortened five-inning game against Notre Dame in Salinas on Tuesday.

The victory gives the Balers a 4-0 record in the Tri-County Athletic League and a tighter control of the league. In five games this year, San Benito has yet to trail.

San Benito scored three runs in the first inning to open the game.

“Once we did that — and I never let this happen — but I thought we were going to win,” head coach Scott Smith said. “I didn’t think they could score three runs off Megan.”

Notre Dame responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs to pull within one run. Afterward, San Benito’s offense exploded.

Brittani Newman, Kim Sparrer and Cassidy Heen all hit home runs to lead the Baler offense.

Despite the win, Smith expects to see more improvement from his team.

“I told the team after the game that they are going to be known for their hitting and Megan’s pitching and not much else,” Smith said. “We make a lot of mistakes out in the field or on the base paths. In the past we’ve done all the little things right. I want them to play with their best efforts.”

San Benito continues its season Saturday at the Wilcox Mission City Invitational.

The Baler kept their perfect league season alive on Tuesday, defeating Palma for the second time this year.

After beating the Chieftains by a only four points earlier this year, Tuesday’s victory came much easier for the Balers.

After the day’s first five matches were completed San Benito was well on its way to a 5-2 win over Palma.

No. 1 singles player Kyle Skinner dominated defeating Palma’s A.J. Yates 6-4, 6-1.
