Despite 16 points from Denise Martinez, the San Benito girls basketball team dropped its second consecutive Monterey Bay League tilt Tuesday, falling 46-42 to Seaside.
The Balers started the contest strong, building a 9-4 lead before Seaside pulled closer behind freshman Marielle Tuazon, who scored a game-high 22 points. Seaside took the lead for good in the second quarter to take a 23-15 halftime lead.
“They were playing a full court press the whole time,” SBHS head coach Mitch Burley said. “We were doing a good job against the press but when we got into the half-court we were having trouble scoring.”
Seaside also paid extra attention Taylor Fabing, who couldn’t find open shots, Burley said.
Seaside eventually extended its lead to 31-17 in the third quarter before the Balers made their run. Behind Martinez, who scored 10 of her 16 points in the final two quarters, and Ellie Burley, who finished with seven points, San Benito pulled to within four points at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Balers pulled to within three points of Seaside, but they could never over come the early deficit in the loss.
“I liked the part how they came back, but I don’t like we were down by so much,” Burley said. “We need to be more aggressive.”
The Balers return to the court at 7 p.m. Thursday against Notre Dame. San Benito is now 8-8 overall and 2-2 inside MBL Gabilan Division play.
