The San Benito boys soccer team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 4-3 win over Aptos on Thursday.
The Balers scored two first half goals and hung on in the second half by scoring two more times.
Senior Rigoberto Mariscal scored twice for San Benito in the win. Luis Fausto and sophomore Leonardo Vaca each added a goal as well.
San Benito finished with 14 shots on the net in the win.
“I’m really happy that we are on the right path right now,” head coach Tony Deras said. “Last year, we were a good team but we weren’t experienced. They weren’t ready for the varsity level, I think. They are all juniors now.”
And that growth has been noticeable in back-to-back wins, Deras said.
“They have a different maturity,” he said. “They are the same players but they are older.”

The Hawks girls soccer team fell to 0-2 in the young season Thursday with a 1-0 loss to Monte Vista Christian.
The Mustangs scored early and the Hawks could never find the equalizer. Despite the results, the team improved from its season-opening loss to Pacific Grove, head coach Carlos Flores said.
“We definitely played a lot better,” he said. “We are just improving each day. We have a really young team.”
The Hawks roster includes eight freshman and five sophomores, Flores said.
“We are going to get better as season goes on,” he said. “Right now, we are preparing for the league season.”
