The San Benito softball team capped a 3-1 weekend Saturday with a 9-1 loss to Carlmont in the Mission City Tournament. The loss gave the Balers a 2-1 record during the tournament.

San Benito is now 14-3.

The tournament started with a 5-1 victory over Homestead. In the game, San Benito scored twice in the first inning to grab the control early. Brittani Newman led the way for San Benito, finishing with two hits and two RBIs. Megan Sabbatini threw well, striking out 11 batters in seven innings. She allowed only three hits.

The tournament continued against Salinas latter in the day. San Benito jumped on the Cowboys, beating their league rival 10-2. The Balers opened the scoring with a four run second inning.

Brittani Sparrer finished the game with two hits and four RBIs for the Balers in the victory. Adriana Ibarra started and pitched five innings for San Benito.

The weekend started with a 5-1 victory over Notre Dame. Cassidy Heen and Brittani Sparrer each finished with two RBIs. Sabbatini earned the win with 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

SBHS Volleyball

The Balers improved to 15-4 overall with a three-game sweep of Monterey on Thursday. San Benito dominated the match early, taking the first two games 25-17 and 25-15.

In the final game, Monterey pulled closer, but the Balers took the victory with a 25-21 win.

SBHS Track and Field

Behind three strong relay finishes, the San Benito girls track and field team placed second behind Leland during Saturday’s Quicksilver Invite in San Jose.

The Balers’ 4×400 relay team (Anjelica Collins, Maura Forbush, Amy Quinones, Kess Rule) took second place finished with a time of 4:20.71. In the discus throw, Breanna Lowther (111-03) took second as well. Simone Cooper took third in the long jump (14-11.50) for the Balers.

The boys squad didn’t finish as strong – placing 11th out of 27 teams -but they finished with three top-5 finishers.

R.J. Collins took second in the 3200 meters (9:55.31) for San Benito. Benjy DeVries took fifth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 42.45 seconds.

The team of Paris Edwards, Alex Garratt, Cody Cameron and John Canes took fourth (44.94 seconds) in the 4×100 relay.
