San Benito lost its first game of the year Saturday. After opening the game with one run in the top of the first inning, the Balers lost to Valley Christian 7-1.

The loss drops San Benito to 9-1 on the season.

“We didn’t play well at all,” head coach Scott Smith said. “I didn’t have the girls prepared. It was my fault. Hopefully, we will learn from this.”

San Benito’s game against Alisal on Thursday was canceled because of rain.

The Balers host Alvarez at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Despite missing some of their top swimmers — including the girls Caitlin Schafer and Rachel Estep — the Balers continued their perfect league season with victories from both the girls and boys over Alvarez on Friday.

Despite their best two swimmers missing the meet, the girls dominated, defeated the Eagles 118-50.

The boys race much closer, though.

Led by Quinn Six, San Benito squeaked by Alvarez 87-83.

“It was a nail biter,” head coach Christine Schafer said. “We didn’t really expect that, but it was close.”

Both the girls and boys lost the first three races of the day but recovered to win.

“When we lost those, we needed to pick it up,” she said. “I think as the day went on we got better and better. I’m extremely proud of them.”
