The San Benito tennis team finished its week Friday with a 4-3 loss to Carmel. No. 1 player Kyle Skinner lost his match to Carmel’s Nick Gurnfanu in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. No. 2 player Geoff Muzik Laos lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
The only Balers single player to win was Andrew Panger, who beat Carmel’s Robert Papcica 7-5, 6-0.
No. 2 double partners Jacob Panger and Eric Johnson won 6-3, 4-6, 15-13.
On Thursday, the Balers beat Palma 4-3 in another close contest. Skinner was the only singles player to win, taking his match in straight sets 6-0, 7-5. The double pairing swept for San Benito. The pairing of Nick Trillo and Aaron Francis won 6-4, 7-5. Sunny Singh and Jacob Panger also won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
No. 3 double pairings Simon Coelho and Alex Reily won 4-6, 7-6 and 11-9 in the day’s tightest match.
The tennis team host Christopher at 4 p.m. at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.
Softball
The San Benito softball team started its defense of its six straight Central Coast Section titles with two dominating victories in Salinas’ Circle of Champions Tournament on Saturday.
In the two games, San Benito scored a combined 17 runs and allowed 0.
San Benito started the tournament with a 9-0 thrashing of St. Ignatius. The Balers scored two runs in each of the game’s first innings. The Balers added five more in the fourth.
Against Burlingame later in the day, San Benito struck for seven runs in the first two innings on their way to a 9-0 win.
San Benito continues the tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Swim
The San Benito girls and boys swim teams each won their first meet of the year Friday defeating Notre Dame and Palma.
The girls defeated Notre Dame 134-41. Swimmer Caitlin Schafer qualified for the CCS finals with a time of 26.61 500 meter freestyle.
The boys beat Palma 116-67.
