Baler long distance runner Vanessa Estrada comes sits in the middle of the pack while competing in the 3200 meter race Friday night at the CCS finals in Gilroy. Estrada finished 5th in the race.

Behind a dominant performance from the San Benito distance runners, the Balers easily handled North Salinas in both the boys and girls track and field meet Thursday in Salinas.

The girls squad ran away with an 84-51 victory while the boys team won 77-59.

The girls took first in 14 of the 16 events. Maura Forbush (200 meters, 400 meters) finished first in two of her events. Vanessa Estrada finished with victories in the 1600 meters (5:06) and 800 meters (2:21.76). The two also combined with Anjelica Collins and Amy Quinones to take first in the 4×400 relay.

Breanna Lowther took first place in the shot put (31-10) and the discus throw (115) for the Balers.

On the boys team, San Benito took first in 10 events. Christopher Cook won three events. He won the high jump with a leap of 6-02 feet. He was also victorious in the long jump (20 feet) and the 200 meters (24.38).

Erik Rivera took home two victories, taking first in the shot put (44-09) and the discus (130-01).

SBHS swimming

The San Benito swimming team split its meet with Salinas on Friday. The girls team continued to swim well, beating the Cowboys 102-83. The boys team, though, struggled and fell 124-62.

SBHS head coach Christine Schafer said she hopes to see better times from the teams.

“We will see where we are once they get some rest,” she said. “I expect some better times.”

SBHS softball

The Balers improved to 2-0 inside Monterey Bay League play Thursday, beating Monterey 2-0.

In a pitching duel, San Benito scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to pull away with the victory. Adriana Ibarra held Monterey to only two hits in seven innings. Ibarra struck out three batters in the win.

Offensively, the Balers scattered six singles. Ellie Burley, who finished 1-for-2, knocked in one run and Cassidy Heen (0-for-3) drove in the final Baler run.

San Benito hosts North Salinas at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

SBHS baseball

With a four-run first inning, San Benito rolled past Salinas on Friday with a 9-2 victory over their league rival. The Balers are now 7-1 inside league play.

Eight players finished with at least one hit for San Benito in an offensive clinic. Dylan Yamasaki (2-for-4), Josh George (2-for-5) and Garret Kelly (2-for-3) all finished with multiple hits for San Benito. George produced the Balers only extra base hit – a double.

Andrew Breen contributed a pinch-hit 2-RBI single, as six Balers drove in at least one run. Jacob Tonascia (1-for-3) also drove in two runs for San Benito.

Hunter Haworth started for San Benito, throwing four innings and allowing three hits and one run.

SBHS volleyball

The Balers stayed undefeated in league play Thursday with a 3-1 victory over Seaside. San Benito travels to Gonzales on Tuesday.
