The best season in boys volleyball history came to an end Thursday for San Benito, in a 3-0 loss to Archbishop Mitty in the second round of the Central Coast Section playoffs.

The Balers, who finished 27-8, couldn’t keep pace with Mitty, calling behind early. Mitty took the first game 25-17 before pulling away with 25-13 victories over the last two games.

Robert Henderson led the way for the Balers with six kills.

The Balers ended the league season with a 12-0 record and a Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division title Thursday, cruising to a 10-4 victory over Salinas.

San Benito needed a six-run sixth inning to pull away from Salinas in the victory. The Balers took the early lead with two runs in the second inning, but Salinas struck for three in the fourth to take a brief lead.

San Benito responded with two more in the top of the fifth but Salinas, once again, tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Megan Sabbatini struck out six batters in seven innings to earn the victory for the Balers. Ellie Burley knocked in three runs to lead the offense.

The Balers, who earned the No. 1 seed in the CCS playoffs, will host the winner of Woodside and North Salinas on Saturday.

The Balers ended a two game slide with a 6-1 victory over Christopher on Thursday, but for the first time in eight years the Balers did not win their league title.

Instead at 14-4, San Benito took second place behind Palma.

In Thursday’s victory, San Benito fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, but responded with runs in four of the next five innings to pull away.

Hunter Haworth earned the victory, throwing four innings and allowing one run. Robert Soto led the way, going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run. Jacob Tonascia and Josh George finished with one RBI.

The Balers earned the No. 3 seed in the Division I CCS playoffs. The host Menlo-Atherton (17-10) at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
