The San Benito boys volleyball team continued its early-season roll Saturday in the Campbell Varsity Classic, finishing 3-2 and improving their record to 8-2 overall.
The Balers opened the tournament with a tough 2-0 loss to Mountain View. In the match San Benito struggled in the first game before rallying to a 25-23 loss in the second game. Less than an hour later, though, the Balers regrouped and came away with a 2-1 (19-25, 25-22, 15-12) victory over Westmont.
The Balers then swept Saratoga 2-0 (25-20, 25-16) before falling to Lynbrook by the same score (25-21, 27-25).
San Benito closed the tournament, though, with a 2-0 (25-21, 25-19) victory over Westmont.
The Balers season continues Tuesday against Pajaro Valley at 6:30 p.m. in Hollister.
SBHS Baseball
Despite grabbing an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Balers suffered their first Monterey Bay League loss Friday at the hands of Monterey. The Toreadors struck for seven runs from the second to the fourth inning to pull away and win 9-6 over the Balers.
Junior Rodriguez led the way offensively for the Balers, finishing with two RBIs. Michael Breen and Josh George both finished 1-for-3 with a double. Cody Freitas finished 2-for-4.
On the mound, starter Brandon Granger struggled, allowing two runs on six hits in two and two-third innings. In relief, Justin Goodwin allowed three runs on three hits in two and two-third innings.
The Balers, now 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the MBL, continue their season at 4 p.m. Tuesday when they host Salinas.
SBHS softball
With only three outs left, trailing by two runs to Carlmont, San Benito scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to emerge with a 8-5 win to improve to 3-1 in the young season. It was the second win of the day for the Balers, who earlier defeated North Salinas 9-1 during the Circle of Champions tournament in Salinas.
The Balers begin league play at 4:30 p.m. in Gilroy.
