Senior Naomi Ruiz tossed the discus 133 feet at the King City Relays on Saturday to break the Hollister High record held for many years by Susan Westphal.

“She was steady all day,” said Baler head girls track and field coach Jennifer Logue. “She was over 120 feet with all her throws.”

Ruiz, who was third in the shot at 32-7 1/2, now holds the best discus mark in the Central Coast Section. The Balers made a strong CCS statement in both the boys and girls divisions, winning both. They also won the frosh-soph boys division.

The Baler girls totaled 132 points for first place, while host King City was second with 99 points. The Baler boys varsity had a marvelous day with 162 points, sweeping the 110-meter hurdles and the triple jump.

In the 110s, sophomore Siljef Tabancay was first at 16.5. Tabancy also won the 300-meter hurdles (44.0), took second in the long jump (19-10 1/2) and ran a leg on the Balers’ 4X400 relay team which took second with a 3:48.6. Tabancay was named male athlete of the meet.

Taking second in the 110s was Matt Leal (16.6), while Chris DiSalvo place third at 16.7. In the triple jump, Thomas Fernandez placed first with a mark of 41-7 3/4 with Steve Bianchi second 41-3 3/4. Armando Larez PR’d at 40-8.

Other Baler winners was the 4X100-yard relay team at 46.3 and Bianchi in the high jump at 6-2. Danny Brooks also jumped 6-2 for the second straight meet, a good sign for last year’s state qualifier.

Baler girl winners were 4X110 (54.4), Jamie O’Brian in the 100-meters (12.9) and 200 meters (27.0), Dani Andrewson in the triple jump (33-1) and Stephanie Starritt in the pole vault (10-2).

Andrewson was also second in the high jump (4-8), second in the long jump (15-5 1/2) and ran a leg on the 4X100 relay team. For that Andrewson was named female athlete of the meet, edging out O’Brian.

“Jamie had a great meet,” said Jennifer Logue. “She would have tied Dani for high-point, but they only gave a member of the relay a quarter of the points. Jamie really pushed herself. It was a great day for Dani, too.”

O’Brian has top eight CCS times in the 100 and 200 meters.

Balers boys head coach Randy Logue is concerned about Thursday’s Tri-County Athletic League meet with Palma at Andy Hardin Field.

“Palma is a very good dual meet team,” said Logue. “This should be a close meet.”

The Baler girls tangle with Notre Dame with the meet starting at 3:30 p.m.
