Ruth Slechta of Gilroy died Saturday, Feb.5 at home. She was 66.
She is survived by her husband Alfted of Gilroy; children Patricia Slechta of Belmont and Richard Slechta of West Hollywood; granddaughter Sarah Slechta of Belmont; sisters Jane Cambouris of Lahina, Hawaii and Grace Givan of Parker, Colo.
She was born in Long Beach in 1938. She earned her nursing credentials at Knapp College, Santa Barbara and a BS Nursing at Linfield College, Ore. She worked as a registered nurse in several hospitals prior to moving to Gilroy in 1987. While in Gilroy, she worked as Director of Nursing at Hospice of the Valley in San Jose and Sunnyview Manor in Cupertino.
She was an active member of Gilroy Presbyterian Church including: church choir, health ministries, bereavement tearn and deacons. Other community activities included: President and committee chairman of American Association of University Women, Board of Directors of Gilroy Salvation Army, President and committee chairman of Philanthropic Educational Organization, St Louise Hospital Auxiliary, team leader and committee co-chair of the Gilroy American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1pm on Sunday, Feb. 27 in Gilroy at the Gilroy Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Hospice of the Valley; 1150 S. Bascom Ave, Ste 7 A; San Jose, CA 95128 or Gilroy Presbyterian Church-Music Program; PO Box 1567; Gilroy, CA 95021 would be appreciated.
A private burial will be held at the Gavilan Hills Memorial Park. Arrangements under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
