Sacred Heart Parish School’s principal has resigned during her first school year on the job.

Father Rudy Ruiz, the parish pastor, confirmed that Jennifer Smith has resigned from her post. He said her contract wasn’t renewed after the current school year for “personnel reasons” and he declined to comment further.

Smith came to Sacred Heart last summer as the successor to former Principal Kathy O’Donnell, who had retired. Before the Sacred Heart job, Smith had attended law school and worked as a paralegal. Prior to that time, she was a teacher for 10 years.

There are about 400 students in the school – pre-kindergarten through eighth grade – and 35 students in preschool, according to the Catholic Schools of the Monterey Diocese Web site.

Kevin Drabinski, communications director for the diocese, declined to comment on whether there is an interim principal.

Parents have been notified that Smith resigned and left before the school year was over.
