I was saddened to read of the recent passing of two local teachers. I appreciated each of them, though I never told them so. Marian Fields made senior English at Hollister High interesting. In some subtle way, she encouraged me to pursue a career in journalism by demonstrating how reading and writing could be fun and intellectually challenging at the same time. As Tuesday’s story in the Free Lance indicated, she saw the best in everyone and she wanted us all to do well.
Teachers don’t seek accolades from their students – they just want us to learn something and improve. That was Mrs. Fields’ calling and it will remain her legacy.
Erma Pivetti was a substitute at Sacred Heart when I was there in the early 80s. Subs have an even more thankless job than “regular” teachers, but Ms. Pivetti’s love of children and teaching was evident to me. In hindsight, I realize the challenges of her work and am impressed that she would spend her retirement years working in education. These educators touched hundreds or thousands of lives over the years. They were a credit to their profession.
