Anyone who thinks Hollister has lost its small-town feel,
probably wasn’t lining the streets or on a float during the San
Benito Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo Parade last Thursday. They
probably overlooked the weekend’s events too.
But for those of us who were there, we know San Benito County
and Hollister still has that cow-town flavor.
Anyone who thinks Hollister has lost its small-town feel, probably wasn’t lining the streets or on a float during the San Benito Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo Parade last Thursday. They probably overlooked the weekend’s events too.
But for those of us who were there, we know San Benito County and Hollister still has that cow-town flavor.
As the parade floats passed by, the streets were filled with people who turned out to witness the popular, annual event. Kids waving, parents smiling and a community having fun – together – lined San Benito Street as far as the eye could see.
It’s a story far removed from the news of crime growth, budget problems and the other nasty issues dominating our front page headlines. As the community newspaper, we feel a responsibility to tackle the tough, and sometimes unpleasant, stories, but cherish the opportunity to focus on what makes San Benito County such a unique treasure in the California landscape. With growth comes change, and often the change is a frightening loss of the past to make way for the future. But last weekend, the past was embraced, as it is this time every year, and the county seemed to suspend all its mounting struggles even if it was only for a weekend.
Whether it was the Elks or family barbecues, the Western Arts Fair, or even the wranglers riding in the competition, the Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo proved why this event has lasted for 71 years.
From our sister city delegates visiting from Takino, Japan to the E Clampus Vitus marching merrily, the Parade strutted the best of San Benito County. The rodeo displayed the talent of our hometown wranglers and their stock. Meanwhile, the other events entertained the community at large. Collectively, it made for a great weekend.
Granted, the Associated Press probably won’t send our coverage of the Saddle Horse and Rodeo Show to newspapers across the country and that’s just fine with us. We’d rather keep San Benito’s little secret just for the locals.
