Hollister – The San Benito High boys soccer team managed to make some good plays on both sides of the ball in Thursday’s matchup against Live Oak, they just weren’t able to make enough as the Acorns picked up the 6-1 win and improved their record to 4-0 in TCAL play.

Live Oak’s Bryan Place broke through with the game’s first goal off an assist from Anthony Razouk before putting the Acorns up 2-0 shortly after with an unassisted goal.

“I think our guys were a little afraid of them,” said Hollister head coach Juan Martinez, who was on the sidelines but not coaching the team as a result of a red card he received on Tuesday against Palma, a red card that the team plans to appeal. “They see how physical they play and they didn’t want to go for the ball.”

Daniel Lagna, the Balers’ keeper, made some spectacular saves on the day but the Live Oak offense proved to be too much for the San Benito defense in the second half as the Haybalers battled back to get into the game, down 2-0.

Hassan Abdullahi got a breakaway chance early in the second half off a pass from Garrett Frechette and scored the Acorns’ third goal of the game. Not long after, Live Oak scored on a wild play that ended with Matt Altamirano putting one in the Hollister net.

The lone highlight in the game for the Haybalers came late in the game as Jaime Torres juked a couple of Live Oak defenders and drove the ball past the Acorns’ keeper.

“We just need to relax and have fun,” Martinez said. “We have to work on the defense because we can’t play like that and win games.”
