I was deeply offended and shocked when Deputy District Attorney (Denny) Wei said, “It is hard to compare (the Johnson) case to any current case,” said Wei, the deputy DA prosecuting (Robert) Orabuena’s case. “We have a new administration now that takes the death of someone very seriously.” Free Lance, Aug. 14.
First of all, Mr. Wei seems to have forgotten that his former employer, the one who hired him, tried and convicted more murders than anyone in this town. My, how quickly he has forgotten who brought him to Hollister and gave him a chance to practice law.
Second, Mr. Wei’s new boss can’t handle the courtroom and he refuses to show up for court. It’s no secret that Mr. Wei has to ask him permission before he can make any decision on any case. I suggest he tell his boss to stop hiding behind Mr. Wei and show up for court.
Third, here is why both cases can be compared. Both were driving, one drunk, the other sober. In both cases, a human being died, one because of drunk driving, the other had his seat belt on, blinker and traveling 3-5 miles per hour. In both cases, the CHP did the investigation. But in one case, the Caucasian drunk driver, he gets charged and convicted with a misdemeanor, the other, the Hispanic who was sober and driving normally, is looking at 15 years in prison.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist, it takes a man of integrity to see the injustice.
Mr. Wei, you and your boss have stained this county with your total lack of understanding of fairness and justice.
Your boss has never set foot in Department One; he has never practiced law in this county and now it appears he never will.
You have yet to “get it.” This is not a game that you can come play then go home to the Bay Area. San Benito County deserves better.
