Haybaler harriers post big improvements from last Saturday’s
Early Bird Invitational to Wednesday’s TCAL Jamboree

Less than a week removed from the Early Bird Invitational, teams from across the Tri-County Athletic League invaded Toro Park in Salinas once again, this time for the TCAL Jamboree on Wednesday.
While it was, more or less, a laid-back fun run, the boys varsity team fared rather well. In fact, of the nine members on the varsity team that clocked times at both Wednesday’s Jamboree and last Saturday’s Early Bird, six of them recorded personal records for the season.
“They didn’t run too good at the Early Bird, but they came back faster and better at the Jamboree today,” boys coach Jess Morales said. “It was nice to see them run the way they did.”
Of the six, Jose Castillo took approximately six seconds off his time from the Early Bird meet, and even took third place overall at the Jamboree (16:56.41). Frankie Rivera, who was fourth overall at the Jamboree (16:57.25), took more than 10 seconds off his time, while Eddie Guzman shed some 40 seconds (17:30.38).
“All my guys ran a lot better than last week,” Morales said.
Adrian Rodriguez, who didn’t compete at the Early Bird, clocked a strong time at the Jamboree, nonetheless, finishing seventh overall in 17:17.25.
On the girls side, coach Josh Morales was pleased to see his team, for the most part, post similar times to that of late last season.
Newcomer Ana Rosa Duarte recorded a 21:07.97 at the Jamboree Wednesday, a strong time that placed her third overall, and one spot behind teammate and second-place finisher Courtney Allen (20:15.44).
“We looked pretty good,” Morales said. “Three or four girls are around 21 minutes, so they’re at the exact time they ran last year, so a lot of them are running their PRs already at the start of the year.”
Dayna Casillas’ time of 21:12.69 not only placed her fifth overall at the Jamboree, but was also a 24-second improvement from the Early Bird last Saturday. Additionally, Kristina Vasquez, who posted an 18th-place time of 22:28.72 at the Jamboree, improved her Early Bird time by 34 seconds.
San Benito will be at Toro Park in Salinas for the third meet in a row on Saturday for the Chieftain Classic. The varsity girls will start at 12 p.m., while the varsity boys will follow at 12:30 p.m.
