previously rained out contest.
Watsonville – San Benito’s boys tennis team earned its first win of the season Friday, beating host Watsonville in a make-up game of its previously rained out contest.

The Haybalers swept the singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over the Wildcatz.

Michael Coffey gutted out a win at No. 1 singles. He won the first game 6-3 and then dropped the second by the same score. The third game went to a tie-breaker and Coffey outlasted Watsonville’s Gilbert Villacana 10-8 to earn the win.

Derek Panger, Mark Tobias and Alan Guttirez all coasted to straight set wins in the remaining singles matches.

Watsonville’s team of Erick Sotelo and Jose Villanueva picked up Watsonville’s only win at No. 1 doubles.

The ‘Balers No. 2 doubles team of D.J. Nielsen and Jon Rudolfs then also gutted out a long match to earn a win.

After dropping the first game to Christian Barajas and Jose Martinez 6-3, Nielson and Rudolfs were strong in the second game with a 6-1 victory and won a third-set tiebreaker to wrap it up.

Tristan Labuguern and Craig Lanning also teamed up for a straight set victory at No. 3 doubles.

Singles – Coffey (SB) d. Villacana 6-3, 3-6, 10-8; Panger (SB) d. Vargas 6-2, 6-2; Tobias (SB) d. Rodriguez 6-2, 6-1; Guttirez (SB) d. Castro 6-1, 6-2.

Doubles – Sotelo/Villanueva (W) d. Pan/Frusetta 6-3, 6-1; Nielson/Rudolfs (SB) d. Barajas/Martinez 3-6, 6-1, 10-4; Labugern/Lanning (SB) d. Guzman/Alanis 6-2, 6-3.
