O’Laughlin takes first in discus; Vasquez, Schroeder are
solid
Mountain View – Morgan O’Laughlin highlighted the efforts of the San Benito track and field team Saturday at the elite St. Francis Carnival Invitational as the senior took home the Haybalers’ lone individual title with her toss in the discus.

O’Laughlin’s toss of 108-feet was 1 1/2 feet better than Milpitas’ Luisa Musika, who was the only other competitor to top 100 feet.

The boys team, which finished eighth in the team competition, was paced by the efforts of Rigo Vasquez and Josh Schroeder.

Vasquez finished less than a second behind Mountain View’s Robbie Reid in the 800 yard race. Reid’s time of 1:58.44 edged Vasquez’s 1:58.98.

Schroeder took third in the pole vault with his mark of 15-0. Los Gatos’ Nico Weiler and St. Francis’ Casey Roche both cleared 16-1.

The boys distance medley team of Frankie Rivera, Thomas Parcell, Eddie Trujillo and Vasquez snagged a top-five finish with its run of 11:13.22.

Ryan Shorey was the only other top-five finisher on the boys side, as he took fifth in the 400 meters at 51.47. The ‘Balers also showed their depth in the 300 hurdles, with Ryan Bartylla placing seventh (43.14), Austin Schmidt taking eighth (43.41) and Evan McFadden finished 13th (45.18).

The girls team, which finished 14th, showed its biggest strength in the distances. The 4×400 relay team of Courtney Allen, Ann Marie Rich, Jessica Rux and Lauren Villasenor took fifth with its time of 4:23.46. Allen also was ninth in the one mile and Villasenor was seventh in the 400.

Ellen Dungy and Justine Hunter took seventh and ninth, respectively, in the high jump, with Dungy clearing 4-10 and Hunter clearing 4-8.

San Benito resumes Tri-County Athletic League action at 3:30pm Wednesday when it hosts Salinas.
