Salinas – San Benito continues to struggle to move out of the fourth position in Tri-County Athletic League competition this season.

Despite coming within three shots of second place, the Haybalers settled for fourth Tuesday at Salinas Fairways – the same finish they’ve had in each of the previous three TCAL tournaments.

On a windy days with gusts near 30 miles per hour, San Benito carded a team score of 220, finishing three strokes behind Salinas and Gilroy, which tied for second place.

Palma placed first for the fourth straight time with its score of 195.

While the inexperienced ‘Balers, whose top five golfers all have no varsity experience, were hopeful for a Central Coast Section tournament berth, the battle for second place and an automatic CCS berth has seemingly become a two-way battle between Gilroy and Salinas.

The Mustangs and Cowboys have rotated between the second and third place spots throughout the season and are currently deadlocked.

There won’t be any league action for three weeks, but San Benito will stay busy next week. The “Balers compete in the Atwater Tournament at Stevenson Ranch at 8:30am Monday, host Monterey at Ridgemark at 2:30pm Tuesday before facing Sobrato at Cinnabar Hills at 2:30pm Thursday.
