Both Courtney Allen and Rachel Shimabukuro were pleased with their times on Saturday at the CIF State Cross Country Division I Championships, but not necessarily their places.

Allen, a senior at San Benito High, clocked an 18:59 at state and finished in 47th, while Shimabukuro, a junior, recorded a 19:35 and crossed the finish line in 102nd place.

There were 190 recorded times in the Division I race, which took place at Woodward Park in Fresno, and Alex Dunne of San Clemente earned the state title in 17:27.

“It was a pretty good race. It was tough,” San Benito girls coach Josh Morales said. “It was fast. I think they were expecting it. But some of the races, the winning times were 17 minutes.”

For Allen and Shimabukuro, each of their times was more than 20 seconds better than the time they posted at the Central Coast Section Championships two weeks ago, where Allen ran to a 19:21 and Shimabukuro a 19:59.

San Benito girls’ soccer

The San Benito girls soccer team lost its first game of the season on Monday after rifling off seven straight games without a defeat.

Playing at home for the first time this season, the Lady Balers lost 3-1 to Live Oak on Monday. They were scheduled to host Pacific Collegiate on Thursday, although that game took place after The Pinnacle’s press time.

San Benito is now 6-1-1 on the year, and won the Watsonville Turkey Tournament last weekend when they bested Pacific Grove 3-0 in the semifinals, then downed Watsonville 3-0 in the championship final on Saturday.

Hannah Cobb scored five of the team’s six goals in those two games, and teammate Monique Bishop added the other toward San Benito’s tournament victory.

On Monday against Live Oak, Yaira Lizarraga scored the lone goal for the Lady Balers in the 5th minute off an assist from Cobb.

Ibarra signs

San Benito senior pitcher Marisa Ibarra signed a letter of intent on Nov. 17 for a partial ride to play softball at San Francisco State University next year, a school that met her needs in both comfortableness and proximity.

“It was close to home, I like the campus, I knew a few girls on the team and I felt comfortable there,” Ibarra said. “I really wanted to stay close to home. My mom and dad have always been to my games, so it was nice to know they could still be there.”

Receiving looks from Dominguez Hills, Humboldt State, Cal State University at Stanislaus and Sonoma State, Ibarra finalized her decision to attend SF State once she visited the campus on Nov. 10.

San Benito boys’ basketball

Pacific Grove’s Brian Kiely hit a six-foot jump shot in the closing seconds and converted the and-one free throw Monday as the Breakers stole a 53-52 win against the San Benito boys basketball team at Mattson Gym in Hollister.

The Balers (1-1) are currently competing at the 26th Annual Seascape Classic at Aptos High. Their opener against Gunn on Thursday was held after The Pinnacle’s press time.

The Balers had a shot at another win on Monday against Pacific Grove, however, but the Breakers’ last-ditch effort supplied them with a three-point play and a one-point win.

Dominic Zanella had his second double-double performance in as many games for the Balers, dropping 16 points and pulling down 11 boards.
