The San Benito boys volleyball team proved their tournament victory over Monterey earlier this month was no fluke on Tuesday night, when the Haybalers swept past the Toreadors in three games (27-25, 25-19, 25-17).
Adrian Rodriguez had 30 assists, Danny Ruiz and Luis Bradley contributed 14 and 13 digs, respectively, and seven different ‘Balers chimed in for a combined 32 kills in the victory, which improves San Benito to 3-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 10-5 overall.
The win followed a 2-2 performance at the Hammer and Roofing Seminar tournament in Willow Glen last weekend, where San Benito defeated American of Fremont (25-10, 25-19) and Harbor High (25-7, 25-15) by 2-0 margins, but lost to Los Gatos (11-25, 12-25) and Valley Christian (15-25, 25-20, 10-15) to finish the 16-team tournament in fifth place.
Last year, the ‘Balers finished in 12th place at the same tournament.
“I was pretty happy,” San Benito head coach Luis Espinoza said. “Going four games, pretty much one after the other, it made us a little tired. But it was a good tune-up going into this week, and it showed.”
San Benito hadn’t swept Monterey, the four-time defending TCAL champs, in four years.
“It was pretty cool,” Espinoza added.
Erik Rodriguez was the kill leader on Tuesday with nine, while Brian Hawks, Jakob Rice and Luis Bradley each had six kills apiece.
San Benito will visit undefeated Gilroy (3-0) Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
