‘Balers win fourth game in a row, beat North Salinas 63-46
Thursday
Earlier in the season, San Benito coach John Becerra said his Haybaler basketball team was beating the teams they were supposed to beat.
With a 63-46 win over North Salinas on Thursday night, coupled with last week’s 62-56 victory against Alisal, the Haybalers are beginning to reach the next level.
“These are the ones that we were not able to get earlier in the season,” Becerra said. “Hopefully, things are changing are way.”
Marty Bueno scored 21 points to lead the ‘Balers to their fourth win in a row, and a 5-1 record in the Tri-County Athletic League.
They are currently tied for first place with Palma, which played Salinas Thursday night.
San Benito’s Tyler Ruiz scored 18 points and Jamil Taylor had 11.
“The whole team was outstanding passing the ball,” Becerra said. “Everyone looked for the open man and did the things that make us successful.
“When we pass the ball, we’re very good, and in the first half, we were outstanding.”
San Benito scored 24 points in the first quarter, and followed the offensive output with stout defense, holding North Salinas to just four points and eight points in the second and third quarter, respectively.
“Defensively, I thought we did a lot the whole game,” Becerra added.
San Benito will return to the floor on Saturday to host Salinas at Mattson Gym. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
