The San Benito County Planning Commission continued to pave the way for the proposed housing and golf development at San Juan Oaks Golf Club and we applaud the move.
San Juan Oaks, under the outstanding direction of Scott Fuller, has been a model for the county in every way.
The golf course, clubhouse, restaurant and meeting facilities are top-notch and have consistently served the needs of our county’s residents and its visitors.
With a new and important emphasis on attracting tourists to San Benito County, an effort that Fuller greatly contributed to as well, the plan to develop San Juan Oaks into an even bigger and better attraction is a sound and attractive one.
We especially like the way Fuller and the investors have carefully followed the growth rules already in place in our county.
Just a quick drive outside the Hollister city limits to San Juan Oaks – or even in the general vicinity – proves that the current golf course and adjoining facilities are aesthetically pleasing to the environment.
With state money so tight, there is no reason to try to stop the addition of a nice hotel and two new golf courses that will surely attract the cash-happy state tourists, along with golf enthusiasts from around the nation and world.
New jobs for county residents and sorely needed tax revenues are additional plusses.
The number of home lots requested has been trimmed to 186, which is a very reasonable request to comply with actual and common sense growth.
The blueprint also contains 1,162 acres for permanent wildlife habitat, a 61-acre park and 55 acres of preserved agriculture land, filling out the excellent proposal.
We urge the Planning Commission to approve the plan at its Jan. 7 meeting.
Then we strongly urge the Board of Supervisors to give the OK to this project and leave unnecessary additional roadblocks behind.
This project is important to the future of San Benito County residents and has been modeled after the success of a current county jewel, San Juan Oaks Golf Club.
Using the Golf Club expansion plans for a political football of any kind will send the wrong message to county residents, the same ones who will be heading to the county ballot boxes in March and November.
