San Juan Oaks Golf Club will be the host site for the ESPN National Golf Challenge.

PGA professional Fred Couples, the co-designer of San Juan Oaks and recent winner of the Houston Open, is the event spokesperson with proceeds benefiting The V Foundation for cancer and research and The First Tee for junior golf.

This is a grassroots event wherein two-person teams qualify at 120 host sites nationwide during the month of May. All amateurs with an established handicap are eligible to form their two-person team, make a tee time at the host site and play. All scoring is done by the host site.

There will be a scoreboard in the clubhouse showing the top ten teams. Teams are eligible to try and qualify as many times as they like.

The top 10 qualifying teams will compete in a playoff tournament at San Juan Oaks on June 7 at 1 p.m.

The top 10 teams from each home site then play off with the winning team from each site competing in the finals on July 15 at Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley.

The winners will be the guests of ESPN at the 2003 ESPY Awards in Los Angeles and receive a special edition ESPY.

“Grassroots events such as the ESPN National Golf Challenge are great for the participants, the courses and the game of golf,” said Couples. “I’m thrilled to be part of this nationwide endeavor and look forward to seeing the national finalists in July.”
