One of the tucks used by the San Juan Bautista fire department

San Juan Bautista officials Tuesday discussed a fire caused by explosion to a camper Oct. 13 at The Alameda.
The fire was reported around 9 p.m. Oct. 13 at 205 The Alameda in San Juan Bautista. City officials scheduled a special meeting on the matter for Nov. 3.
A woman spoke to council members during a fire department report and said she was a neighbor who heard the explosion and came outside to find a “huge ball of fire.” She and another resident who spoke expressed concerns about the property and speculation over what caused the explosion.
Mayor Andy Moore encouraged the speaker to attend the special meeting in November. Moore stressed that the camper was abated the following day.
“We are on it,” Moore said. “Roger was out there the next morning. We said, ‘Hey this is it.'”
Fire Chief Mike O’Connor showed up later in the meeting and explained it further.
“The fire started by a lantern left inside the trailer,” O’Connor said. “We suspect one of the K9s inside the trailer knocked it over.”
O’Connor said both dogs in the motor home died in the fire, which was contained to the vehicle. He said fire investigators believe an LPG tank helped to spark the fire.
The vehicle was taken to a tow company’s lot, O’Connor said.
