Well, I hope that by the time you’re reading this column that we have had a few days of rain. It’s the middle of January and we have had less than two inches of rain since July. Weather forecasters have predicted a wet weekend so let’s hope they’re right.

Many folks are definitely taking advantage of this dry spell in order to get their calves branded. The Topo Ranch branded two sets of calves last week at the Red Corrals while John Wooster branded some of his calves at his place. It’s darn sure a good time to get them done before it gets too wet and the calves get really big.

Many San Benito County kids spent last Sunday at the Posse Grounds in Salinas participating in a high school rodeo. Cash Robinson had an awesome day as he won the average in the cutting, tie down roping and the team roping with his partner, Brody Sans. Neither of the boys had any luck in the bull riding. Thank goodness for the bullfighter, Colton Lyons, as he “took one for the team” as he was cartwheeled by a hooky bull that flung Brody for a spin first. Thankfully everyone was OK. Congratulations also go out to Mikael Bernadette for winning the goat tying and to Lacy Bourdet for winning the breakaway roping. San Benito has some pretty tough competitors. Congratulations to all!

My NFL season has officially come to a close as my Broncos took a whipping from the Patriots last week. That game was almost embarrassing to watch! Oh well. At least we made it to the playoffs, unlike some other teams I know of….ha ha! Speaking of the NFL, Kristy Bourdet is in charge of a Superbowl Pool that benefits CA High School Rodeo, District 4. Squares are only $20 each and it pays $300 per quarter to win. There are very few squares left so if you’re interested get in touch with Kristy as soon as possible.

Birthday wishes go out to my middle son, Todd Sans Jr. as he turns 17 this week. My, how time flies. He’s going to be graduating next year! Happy birthday, Bud!

Keep your fingers crossed and your rain dances going as we hope for a really wet week. If you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or email me at
