Don’t look now, but the Hollister High girls soccer team is tied for first place after four matches in the 10-game Tri-County Athletic League season.
The Balers routed Salinas 10-1 Wednesday at the Salinas Sports Complex. That, coupled with Live Oak’s 3-1 defeat of Notre Dame, tied the Acorns and Balers for first place in the T-CAL at 3-0-1. The Spirits fell into second place at 3-1, 8-4 overall.
The Balers (10-3-2 overall) can capture their first title in several years with a run of the table. It won’t be easy with Notre Dame here on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Live Oak here next Tuesday at 5 p.m. The matches will be played at Andy Hardin Stadium with an admission charge of $4 for adults, $2 for children six to 12 years of age.
Meanwhile, in Salinas Jennifer Vandenberg enjoyed another grand offensive evening with five goals and an assist. Jenny Maheu stayed hot with three goals and an assist. Michelle Sanchez and Becky Bonner split the Balers’ other two goals, while Vanessa Gowett lended a foot with two assists.
For the season, Vandenberg has 44 goals while Maheu has 28. Both are career highs for a season.
Chanin-Rae Maka was in goal once more for the Balers, replacing Mary VonUrff, who has been ill.
“The competition between the two goalkeeper has improved each of them,” said Baler coach Michael Schurig. “Maka’s playing really well right now and Mary’s been playing well, too.”
