De La Rosa & Co., an investment bank based in Los Angeles and San Francisco, has awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Jacob Garcia of Hollister’s San Benito High School.
He was among 30 high school seniors across California to receive the award for seniors from participating public schools submitting more than 200 essays to this year’s Fabric of Society essay competition, according to an announcement from the company.
The competition is based on quotes about the meaning of citizenship by four leading thinkers: Greek philosopher Socrates, President Dwight Eisenhower, writer James Baldwin, and contemporary social activist Eric Liu, according to the company announcement.
All 30 essays will be online soon at www.ejdelarosa.com.
Other Northern California winners are:
• Aurora Alvarez of San Francisco’s Balboa High;
• Michelle Yoon of San Francisco’s Lincoln High;
• Nora Katz and Michael Nguyen of Oakland Technical High;
• Julia Fanger of Alameda High;
• Jacob Joens of Willits High;
• Esther Ho of Stockton’s Cesar Chavez High;
• Lloyd Chen of Elk Grove’s Laguna Creek High; and
• Three winners from Atwater’s Buhach Colony High – Angelica Ayala, Bella Ayala and Mykayla Macias.

• Kevin Flores of L.A. Unified’s Contreras Learning Center;
• Amber Fessler and Mario Gutierrez of Azusa High;
• Helen Kim and Kevin Alvarez of Santa Fe Springs High;
• Pooja Bhatt of Westchester High;
• Andrew Cronin and Nathan Lainez of Santa Maria’s Pioneer Valley High;
• Brooke Demchuk and Christopher Alberts of Ventura High;
• Nishi Parikh and Jose Martin of Riverside’s La Sierra High;
• Ricardo Cortez of Ontario’s Chaffey High;
• Alexandra Maloof and Danielle Bost of El Centro’s Central Union High;
• Michelle Don of Anaheim’s Savanna High;
• Rosanna Thai of Oceanside High School; and
• Zarly Hernandez of San Diego’s King-Chavez Community High.
The winning essays were selected by four guest judges: Actor Andy García; Former San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong; Television news anchor Palmira Pérez; and U.S. Marine Corps combat correspondent Michele Watson.
