San Benito High School student Nick De Hoyos took third place in the 2013 Congressional Art Competition for his charcoal drawing, “Homeless in the Land of Prosperity.” His artwork will hang in Congressman Sam Farr’s Salinas office for the year.
De Hoyos competed against other high school students in the 20th congressional district, which includes San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.
The first-place prize went to Rachel Martin, of Aptos High School, for a digital photograph entitled, “Walking in Israel.”
“It is great to see all of these wonderful pieces from the next generation of artists from the talent-rich Central Coast,” Farr said in a press release about the winners.
Martin’s piece will be displayed in Washington, D.C. in the work of other artists from around the county. Martin will travel to Washington, D.C. for a reception and will receive a $1,500 renewable scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Avi Sinai, of Georgiana Bruce Kirby Preparatory School, took second place with his piece “Icarus in Santa Cruz.” His piece will be displayed in Farr’s Washington office.
The top winners were selected from a field of 22 entries from eight local schools.
Two San Benito High School students were among five honorable mentions. They included Mirla Ramirez for “Bounty of the County” and Cara Marie May Esteban for “California Dreaming #3.”
