The San Benito boys volleyball went the distance with host Seaside Thursday but couldn’t close the door on the Spartans in the end.

The ‘Balers fell in five games (17-25, 25-20, 25-22, 12-25, 13-15).

San Benito is now 0-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 0-5 overall.

Despite the loss, though, coach Luis Espinoza was pleased with his team’s performance on Thursday.

“I was happy with the way we played. It was better than the last four games,” he said. “The guys tried hard. I wasn’t disappointed with the way we played.”

Adrian Rodriguez had 40 assists and Erik Rodriguez added 20 kills for San Benito, which took a 2-1 lead into the fourth game.

But the ‘Balers couldn’t keep pace and lost the fourth 25-12.

“The fourth game, we let up,” Espinoza said. “We didn’t finish the game.”

San Benito fell short in the deciding fifth game 15-13.

Brian Hawks and Michael Gonzales each added 10 kills for San Benito, and David De La Cruz had 18 digs.

San Benito will now play in the Hammering and Roofing Seminar Tournament in Willow Glen on Saturday.

“We were able to play with these guys,” Espinoza said. “Each of the last three years, it’s been back and forth with Seaside. They bring the best out of us.

“Hopefully, going into this tournament at Willow Glen, we can take that over there.”
