One of the men involved with the April 16 shooting in San Juan Bautista was sentenced to three years felony probation and time served Thursday after agreeing to a plea deal on Oct. 15, while two other suspects have been identified in the case.
Gonzalo Ramirez, 26, was taken into custody in April after witness statements identified him at the scene of the crime. Ramirez was initially charged with attempted murder with special allegations of using a firearm and taking part in a street gang, but after his plea deal the charges were lessened to assault with a firearm on a person.
Another suspect, Javier Enrique Estrada, is in custody and was arraigned Oct. 18. Estrada is being accused of attempted premeditated murder with an enhancement of personally discharging a firearm to cause great bodily harm. He is awaiting a preliminary hearing on Dec. 16.
The sheriff’s office issued an arrest warrant on Oct. 18 for a third suspect, Omar Aguilar, but have yet to track him down, Prosecutor Patrick Palacios said. Aguilar is accused of attempted premeditated murder.
On the evening of April 16, officers responded to a report of shots fired at Muckelemi Street in San Juan Bautista. Deputies found the victim in the street with a single gunshot wound.
Witness reports identified four to five people inside a vehicle that pulled up to the victim. Two suspects left the vehicle and shot the man before fleeing toward Highway 156. The victim was transported to a south Bay Area hospital where he was treated and released.
Through the investigation, authorities determined Ramirez was not the one to fire the shots, Public Defender Gregory LaForge said.
“We thought it was a fair resolution because he was not the shooter,” LaForge said.
Palacios couldn’t comment on the case because of the other co-defendants, he said.
