SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – One has to hand it to the Anzar High boys soccer team. The Hawks bowed the neck in Tuesday’s home match with first place Greenfield, losing 10-0.
The bowing the neck part was because the Hawks played the game a man short and trailed just 3-0 at the half.
“We had an injured player show up just in case we needed him,” said Hawks first-year coach Mick Brown. “The school is still on vacation and some of our players are in Mexico.”
The Hawks were without starting goalie Remigio Mireles, midfielder Ricardo Perez and top defender Justin Green.
“They would have helped,” said Hawks defender Victor Ramirez.
The Hawks (0-6, 0-4 Mission Trail Athletic League) were stung in the offseason when three of their better players opted to play for North County.
“If we had all of the possible players we should have, we would have lost 3-0 or 2-0,” said. “We would have emphasized defense. I believe defense wins games and offense brings in fans.”
The players on the pitch played pretty well for the Hawks. On defense, freshman goalie Daniel Vosper did a very good job in Mireles’ stead. And senior Loren Hatt never stopped his motor. Ramirez is physical defender and surely one of the most physical players in the league.
“I saw him play a couple of years ago,” said Bruins coach Ruben Alvarez of Ramirez. “He’s a player who can get the ball in goal. They would be better with him on offense.”
“The team needs me on defense and I like playing there,” said Ramirez.
Jose Ornelas, George Medland, Michael Welden and Kevin Parsons battled as much as possible, considering no Hawk player was able to get a rest.
“We were flat,” said Parsons, a real fighter on the pitch. “We need to get in better condition.”
The Bruins (4-2-2, 4-0-1) tallied in about the 15th minute on a cross from Jose Pantoja to Eric Hernandez, who headed it in adeptly. Shortly afterward, Cruz Aguirre broke through for another goal. Augustine Malogon booted in the third goal of the half on a beautiful, long direct kick, which sailed over Vosper’s head.
Greenfield got serious with an early blitz in the second half, ripping off three quick goals to damper any possible upset hopes by the Hawks.
“Our numbers wore Anzar down,” said Alvarez. “We have a full roster. Anzar’s defense played real well for the first half.”
Still, it was an improvement over last year’s match with the Bruins, who blanked the Hawks 21-0.
“Our goal this year was to cut the opponent’s goals in half,” said Brown. “We did that, but I’m not satisfied with it, nor are the boys.”
The Hawks are at Robert Louis Stevenson in Pebble Beach Thursday before hosting King City Saturday at 10 a.m.
